The Kennel Club Good Citizen Scheme

Here at the East Riding Branch we are actively involved in The Kennel Club Good Citizen Scheme, we find it very useful for handlers and dogs to learn those aspects of dog ownership which help us all get along better with the general community. The Scheme is well structured into different levels and the certificates badges and rosettes available for achieving the different levels are a good incentive for the members to try to achieve the various different awards.

Our enthusiasm for the Good Citizens Scheme can be demonstrated by the fact that we have been invited to Crufts three times to demonstrate different levels of the scheme. 1998 and 1999 saw us involved with 4 dogs and handlers for the bronze level and for the 2000 Millennium Crufts we took a larger team of 9 dogs & handlers to demonstrate aspects of the silver level. In 1999 our club was the first for any breed of dog in the East Riding of Yorkshire Area to run the silver level award at which 9 dogs passed. Then in May 1999 4 of our dogs, Sabre, Storm, Blue & Sherman were the first (again of any breed) in East Riding of Yorkshire to take and to pass the Gold level.

For more information on this scheme you can either contact the branch (see the contact page) or can get information directly from the kennel Club - look to the links page where you will be able to go directly to their site. There you will find details of exactly what is tested at the different levels of the scheme and down at the club we can explain the mechanics of how these tests are carried out and how to train with them in mind.
